Bulbs are an easy way to set it and forget it! You generally want to plant bulbs the season before you expect blooms. So if you want bulbs that bloom in the summer, you plant them in the Spring. If you want bulbs that bloom in the fall, you plant them in the summer. Once you have them planted, nature will take care of the rest. The only job you have is figuring out what type of bulbs you want to grow.
1. Iris
The iris is a tough plant that will last and multiply in your garden. Iris comes in blue, yellow, white, and purple. These bulbs prefer to be planted in a sunny location and will bloom in late winter – early Spring. Irises are also drought-tolerant in case you want something that doesn’t have to be watered regularly.
2. Crocus
Crocus are also an early Spring bloomer. They are planted in Fall, but they don’t like hot weather. When it gets hot, you will notice that they fade away.
3. Hyacinth
Hyacinth is an early Spring bloomer in between crocus and tulips. Be sure to plant these bulbs in well-drained soil to avoid root rot. You can fertilize them in the Spring when they come up by fertilizing at the base of the plant. Otherwise, they need little water and grow perfectly on their own.
5. Ranunculus
Ranunculus have a rose-like appearance that comes in shades of pink, burgundy, red, and orange. They love direct sunlight, but do not like heat. With blooms that appear in late winter and early spring, they are great companion plants for tulips and irises.
