Look no further! All of the plants that made this list can work in windowless rooms (with a grow light) or low light/dimly lit rooms.
This post is all about true low light houseplants that you can grow in any room in your house.
So, which houseplant can you pick up today to make your space a little more green? It seems that grocery, home improvement, and big box retailers are all selling some sort of houseplant these days. Take advantage of this phenomenon but pay attention to the prices. Shop around to see what deals you can get! The good thing about houseplants is that they are available year-round.
So let’s get started with your low light houseplant list!
1. Pothos
Pothos are adaptable and will grow anywhere in your home. You can fertilize them 3-4 times per year and water them every 1-2 weeks. If you have variegated Pothos, they may lose their variegated lines if there is not enough light but it will not kill the plant. You just might end up with all green leaves.
2. Philodendron
Philodendrons are perfectly fine with low light. The growth may be slower but your plant will live! You want to water this pretty plant at least every 1-2 weeks or when the plant has dried out in the first 2 inches of soil. Fertilize it every month. If growth has slowed, fertilize and water less.
3. Peace Lily
A peace lily is an easy plant for your office or living room. This plant only needs watering if the top 2 inches of the soil is dry. They are also exceptional at keeping the air clean.
4. Snake Plant
Snake plants can go a long time without water! Luckily, all they really need is watering every 10 days. You can neglect these plants, and they will still live! They are also easy to propagate.
5. ZZ Plant
The ZZ plant is another super easy plant that requires minimal care. The soil should be dry before you water it. Overwatering is one way (maybe the only way) you can kill this plant. It grows fine without fertilization.
6. Calathea
As with most low light plants, allow the soil to become somewhat dry before watering this plant, or water every 1-2 weeks.
7. Fittonia
This pretty plant loves to dry out between watering. Some houseplant enthusiasts call them dramatic for their tendency to “faint” when they lack water. Just give them a good bath, and they will perk up!
One rule of thumb you want to keep in mind is that low light plants are growing less than their direct sun or outdoor counterparts. If the plant is not growing as fast, it is using less energy. This means that they will likely require less water and less fertilization. Most will require the soil to be dry before watering again.
As always, read your plant care tag and follow the instructions.
