Drought tolerant plants have share some of the same characteristics. If a plant has silver or frosty foliage, then it uses this feature to reflect sunlight and push some of the heat away from the plant. Plants that have a waxy surface usually don’t lose water as fast. The waxy surface tends to hold water in the plant. If a plant has fleshy/puffy leaves like sedum, they have learned how to store water in their leaves. Lastly, plants that have fuzzy or hairy surfaces store water fairly well. The hairs trap water molecules and keep the plants from drying out.
Be sure to pick plants that are appropriate for your growing zone. You can find your growing zone here.
