It’s that really warm time of year, and you are daydreaming of the best annuals for sun and heat…in a perfect garden! The only issue is you don’t quite know what to put in that full sunspot in the middle of your garden space. All plants are not created equal!
There are two overall categories for most gardening plants: annuals and perennials. Perennials come back every year. Annuals, on the other hand, will have to be planted every year. Annuals are great for the gardener that doesn’t quite know what they want in space or who likes to try something different every year. You really can’t go wrong with perennials or annuals. It just takes a little bit of planning!
This post is all about the best annuals for sun and heat in your summer gardening space.
So you don’t want the commitment of growing flowers that come back year after year. Ok, Cool! But, you do want blooms that last the whole summer (hello zinnias and vincas) and not just a short time (hello tulips and azaleas) This list of annuals won’t disappoint.

1. Zinnias
Zinnias are beautiful full sun flowers that come in several beautiful colors. You don’t have to do much to them once you plant them. They grow anywhere from .5 to 2.5 feet tall! And butterflies love them!
2. Petunias
Petunias love full sun. They also come in a wide variety of colors. If your petunia blooms start to fade or look like they are dying, simply deadhead them by pulling off the dying bloom. AND…the blooms will come back.
3. Begonias
Begonias are beautiful and they resemble little roses! These plants love full sun or partial shade. They can grow between .5 – 1.5 feet.
4. Impatiens
Impatiens can be grown in full shade or partial shade. They also do very well in containers. Impatiens can get very tall and grow anywhere from .25 to 6 feet!
5. Vincas
Vincas are beauties, but they are tough flowers! They can hang with any sun-loving, drought-tolerant plant. Also known as a periwinkle, they bloom the entire summer! They can grow from .75 – 2.5 feet.
Planning a full sun garden is not hard as long as you have (beautiful) options.
